Accident Response Fee Facts

Municipalities in Michigan and other parts of the country are attempting to raise revenue by charging new fees to insurance companies when the police or fire departments respond to auto crashes.  These municipal emergency response fees are in addition to taxes already paid by residents in those municipalities.  While the insurance industry recognizes the crucial role that fire and police services have in the safety of our communities, these fees are not a fair or equitable distribution of the costs of these public services.

 Accident Response Fee News Updates:

Missouri was the first state in the country to enact a law banning emergency response fees.  The law was effective on August 28, 2007.  Since then, five other states,
Georgia, Indiana, Missouri, Pennsylvania and Tennessee, have also passed legislation banning these fees.

After encouragement from their residents, two Michigan cities, Kentwood and Wyoming, both repealed their tax fee ordinances in 2008.
